About the festival

In the theatre community puppeteers – the eternal handlers of the elements, necromancers, and fetishists – were always considered as freaks. Every family needs a black sheep, right? Today, perhaps, more than ever. Puppets, like an alien strain, have penetrated all the corners of contemporary theatre. And, as any virus, this strain is contagious. Inhabiting various spaces, genres, types of theatre, they cause mutations, beget bizarre, wondrous hybrids. They penetrate the human flesh and create a new acting body (as in the Dutch visionary DudaPaiva's creations). They «humanize» the very concept of a «thing», making the most psychological classical material (such as Anna Karenina played out by the crystal glasses in the Czech KAR) available to the theatre without an actor. And if they discover soul in the things (and what if not a soul is inside the old auto in the Petrozavodsk Scrap), just imagine what they could discover in people! The Slovenian MatijaSolce tames bones, Nick Steur from the Netherlands mesmerizes rocks, the French Brazilian EvandroSerodio loses himself in a dolphin. The new puppet-strains invade the new spaces (e.g. a SUV-caravan, as in the French Clic), negating the whole idea of theatre as a place. These puppets are everywhere and the weirdest of these weird comrades we tried to gather together at our freak-fest – the 3d BTK-Fest..

БТК-ФЕСТ 2016: FREAK CASE
