Many Andersen tales are about outsiders; this one is no exception. A spoon is melted, providing tin just enough for 24 uniform soldiers and one more – but without a leg. Although he can stand just as steady on his one leg, his handicap defines his fate. He falls in love with a ballerina, dancing on one leg – she must be just like him, his mate in body and soul. But most important to him is being no lesser soldier, as valiant, steadfast, and dignified as the next one, the “normal” one. He invests so much of himself into this that he loses his ballerina, his only chance to experience love. The Steadfast Tin Soldier is a story about the heart and the mind, about substances and appearances. A brilliant metaphor of “otherness” and obsessions that keep us from becoming ourselves.
